First Simulation of the Meeting of North-Atlantic Youth Council

The gathering entitled: NATO Youth Model of Montenegro was officially opened by the representatives of Montenegrin and international institutions.

In his speech addressed to students, Douglas Jones, Deputy Ambassador of the United States, said that each of 28 countries of the Alliance share the same values, pointing out that the decisions have been made by consensus.

Slovenian Ambassador, Vladimir Gasparič, said the fact that all members share the same values is crucial.

- I have recently said that NATO annual membership fee is 500 000 EUR. That is considerably smaller amount if compared to the individual military development requirements. In addition to this, you will become the member of the largest military-political organization in the world – Gasparič said. He added that all of those who participate in the decision making process have to be quick-minded.

State Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Bojan Šarkić, said that NATO is a complex and specific organization within which rules have to be obeyed.

He provided several useful pieces of advice to students, with regard to the communication within NATO, while he emphasized the fact that they are obliged to respond to each e-mail they receive and to listen to the speaker attentively.

Adviser in the Ministry of Defence, Mehmedin Tahirović, while addressing to the young, said that for the first time in history, small and large countries are sitting at the same table, being equal in the decision making process.

- NATO is the only institution which may guarantee continuous security and prosperity to Montenegro –Tahirović said.

The representative of the Model NATO Youth Summit, Brisel Dragusin Olivia, said to students that their opinion matters, as they will be the guardians of security in future.

Programme Manager of the Public Policy Institute, Selena Tasić, said that what is valued today, besides the possession of a diploma, is the engagement of the young apart from curriculum.

- The goal of this simulation is to inform students better, to make them attain knowledge and skills needed for understanding, so that one day they may actively participate in the accession of Montenegro to the Euro-Atlantic community, either as government representatives or the representatives of civil sector or media – she added.

The Conference was organized by the Public Policy Institute in cooperation with Montenegrin alumni, with the support from the U.S. Embassy.
