Panel discussion “EU Access Agenda -  INTELLECTUAL CAPITAL PROTECTION - Ethical Imperatives”

With the aim of providing expert and political support for the accession negotiations of Serbia with the EU, Public Policy Institute organize panel discussion “EU Access Agenda - INTELLECTUAL CAPITAL PROTECTION - Ethical Imperatives”. The panel will be held on Monday, June 16th, 2014, at 11 AM at the conference room “Nikola Tesla B”, Hotel Metropol, Belgrade, Bulevar kralja Aleksandra 69.

We would like to emphasize the importance of rapid opening of Chapter 7 – Intellectual Property Rights – and to address the current issues: what is the significance of intellectual capital; how to make Law on Copyright and Related Rights effective; how to encourage the public and prepare the institutions for the implementation of regulations; what are the benefits of effective protection of copyright and related rights.

Introductory speeches will haveProf. Mijat Damjanović, PhD, President of the PPI Executive Board, Jadranka Joksimović, MA, Minister in charge of European Integrations in the Government of the Republic of Serbia and Prof. Tanja Miščević, PhD, Head of Negotiating Team for Accession of the Republic of Serbia to the EU.

The discussion is divided into two thematic session.

Panelist within first sessionModels of intellectual property protection – experience and practice in the process of EU Integrationwill be: Prof. Vlastimir Matejić, PhD, President of European Movement in Serbia,Maja Bogataj Jančič, PhD, Director of the Intellectual Property Institute, Slovenia, Mitko Chatalbashew, Director of European affairs of theCISAC (International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers), Kristina Janušauskaite, PhD, Legal expert of the IFPI (International Federation of Phonographic Industry) and Boštjan Dermol, President of Performing Artists’ Assembly of IPF Slovenia(Collecting Society for Rights of Performers and Producers of Phonograms).

Panelist within second sessionLegal framework for the effective stimulation of intellectual capital” will be: Branka Totić, Director of the Intellectual Property Office of Serbia, Aleksandar Kovačević, Director of SOKOJ (Organization of Authors and Composers of Serbia), Aleksandar Cvetković, Director of the PI(Organization for Collective Administration of Performers' Rights), Slobodan Nešović, Member of Executive Board OFPS (Organization of Phonogram Producers of Serbia) and Rodoljub Stojanović, Secretary General of UDS (Union of Discographers of Serbia).

The discussion will be of great significance for future activities of all participants, among which will be the most important representatives of state institutions, professional associations of intellectual property rights holders, civil society organizations, media, international organizations and diplomatic missions in Serbia.

This is one of the first envisaged activities of the Public Policy Institute in the area of intellectual property protection. By promoting public dialogue and constructive solutions, PPI wishes to contribute the efforts aiming at making this subject more familiar both to decision makers and citizens.
